Baseline throughput

Start with a clean speed test on the same network and device that's streaming. You're not looking for peak numbers — you're looking for whether sustained throughput comfortably exceeds the stream's target bitrate (3x is a healthy margin).

Stability under sustained load

  • Jitter. Variation in latency — the single best predictor of buffering.
  • Packet loss. Sustained loss above 1% degrades video noticeably.
  • Wi-Fi versus wired. A wired comparison instantly rules in or out the local link.

DNS and CDN reach

Slow or inconsistent DNS resolution can stall stream startup. CDN edge selection — which server you're being routed to — affects every later byte. Check both before assuming the platform itself is at fault.

Continuity into monitoring

Streaming issues are intermittent by nature. One-off tests rarely reproduce them. Continuous stability monitoring on the affected network produces the time-series evidence needed to escalate or change ISP, not just to vent.

Should I trust speed-test numbers for streaming?
