Data sources
Our tools combine browser-side measurements with a small set of public, well-regarded external services. This page documents each one and what it contributes to the results you see.
Cloudflare DNS-over-HTTPS (1.1.1.1)
Purpose: DNS record lookups for our DNS Lookup tool, Server Status Checker, and Domain Availability Checker. Used because it's fast, globally distributed, and supports DoH directly from the browser.
Frequency: Per user request only.
Limits: Returns the answer the Cloudflare resolver sees. May differ from your local ISP resolver for split-horizon or geo-fenced records.
Cloudflare Speed CDN edges
Purpose: Download/upload throughput and latency measurement for our Internet Speed Test, Wi-Fi Speed Test, and related performance tools.
Frequency: Per user request only.
Limits: Browser-based test ceiling (~10-15% below native client performance on very fast connections).
RDAP registries
Purpose: Domain registration status for the Domain Availability Checker. Replaces deprecated WHOIS for most modern TLDs.
Frequency: Per user request only.
Limits: Not all registries return identical fields; rate limits apply.
IP geolocation provider
Purpose: Approximate location, ISP, ASN for IP Address Checker and related tools.
Frequency: Per user request only.
Limits: Geolocation accuracy varies — country-level is reliable (~95%+), city-level is approximate. Never identifies an individual user.
What runs entirely in your browser
- Wi-Fi quality verdict (uses navigator APIs only).
- Device information and local network inspection.
- Online/offline monitor.
- Browser-based performance check.
These never leave your device — no external service is contacted.
