Home networking, explained
A home network is a chain of components — modem, router, switches, access points, devices. Each one can be the bottleneck. Understanding how they fit together makes upgrades and troubleshooting dramatically easier.
Modem vs router
The modem (or ONT for fiber) is the bridge between your ISP and your home. The router creates your local network, hands out IPs, runs Wi-Fi, and provides firewall/NAT. Many ISPs ship combined modem+router gateways; performance enthusiasts often prefer separate units for flexibility and longevity.
Choosing a router
- Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) or Wi-Fi 6E at minimum in 2026.
- At least four gigabit Ethernet ports.
- A 2.5 Gbps WAN port if your plan exceeds 1 Gbps.
- Active vendor firmware updates (security matters).
Single router vs mesh
A single high-quality router covers most homes under ~1,800 sq ft on a single floor. Mesh is the right answer for larger homes, multi-story layouts, or floor plans where signal can't make it through. Wired backhaul between mesh nodes (Ethernet between them) dramatically outperforms wireless backhaul.
Wiring matters
Anything that can be wired should be wired — TVs, game consoles, desktop PCs, home offices. A Cat 6 cable to a wired access point in a far room outperforms any mesh setup. MoCA adapters (Ethernet over coax) and powerline adapters are useful when running new cable isn't practical.
Network segmentation
Modern routers let you put guest devices, IoT devices, and work devices on separate VLANs or guest networks. This contains breaches (a compromised smart bulb can't see your laptop) and reduces noisy IoT traffic on your main network.
