Wi-Fi optimization, explained

Most home internet complaints turn out to be Wi-Fi problems, not ISP problems. Radio signal is harder to reason about than wired networking — it bends around walls, fights with neighbors, and degrades over distance — but a handful of fundamentals will solve the majority of issues.

How Wi-Fi works at a high level

Wi-Fi is a radio system operating on the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and (on newer devices) 6 GHz bands. Lower frequencies travel further and penetrate walls better but carry less data; higher frequencies are faster but shorter-range. Your router and devices negotiate the best speed they can sustain at the current signal strength.

Router placement

  • Centered in the area you actually use, not the basement or a closet.
  • Off the floor, away from large metal objects and microwaves.
  • Antennas vertical for typical single-floor coverage.
  • Line of sight to where you spend the most time — every wall costs signal.

Bands and channels

5 GHz and 6 GHz are dramatically faster than 2.4 GHz; use 2.4 GHz only for IoT devices or coverage in far rooms. On 2.4 GHz, only channels 1, 6, and 11 don't overlap — pick whichever is least congested in your area. On 5 GHz, the higher (DFS) channels are usually less crowded than the lower ones.

Wi-Fi dead zones

Dead zones are pockets where signal doesn't reach reliably. Causes include: thick walls (concrete, brick, plaster with metal lath), mirrors and metal appliances reflecting signal, multiple floors, and simple distance. The fix is either a better-placed single router or — for larger or oddly shaped homes — a mesh system.

Mesh networking

A mesh system uses multiple access points that share one network name and hand devices off seamlessly. It's the right answer for: homes over ~1,800 sq ft, multi-story homes, or anywhere a single router has obvious dead zones. The trade-off is cost and that wireless backhaul (no Ethernet between nodes) roughly halves the speed at the non-primary nodes.

When to upgrade your router

If your router is more than ~5 years old, doesn't support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), or caps out below your plan's speed on a wired test, it's worth upgrading. Wi-Fi 6 and 6E handle dense device counts much better than older standards — which is the actual bottleneck in most modern homes.
