Online gaming punishes inconsistent connections. A 50 Mbps line with steady 30 ms ping outplays a 1 Gbps line that jitters between 20 ms and 200 ms every other second. This guide focuses on what actually matters: latency, jitter, and packet loss.
Why bandwidth barely matters
Most multiplayer games use a tiny amount of bandwidth — usually under 100 kbps per player. As long as you have any modern broadband connection, more bandwidth won't make gameplay smoother. What matters is how fast and how consistently your inputs reach the game server.
Targets for competitive play
- Ping under 50 ms for competitive shooters and fighting games.
- Ping under 100 ms for casual play across most genres.
- Jitter under 10 ms ideal, under 20 ms acceptable.
- Packet loss at 0% — anything above ~0.5% becomes noticeable.
Reducing latency
Use Ethernet, not Wi-Fi. Pick a server geographically close to you. Close background apps that compete for bandwidth or CPU. If your router supports QoS, prioritize gaming traffic. Avoid VPNs for competitive play unless you're optimizing around ISP routing issues.
Reducing jitter
Jitter usually comes from contention. The biggest fixes are: wire your gaming device, isolate it from large background transfers, and check whether anyone else is streaming or video calling at the same time. Persistent jitter on a quiet network points at your ISP or the route between you and the server.
When the problem isn't you
