Internet speed is a stack of separate measurements that interact differently for different apps. A 1 Gbps connection still feels broken if latency spikes during a video call, and a 50 Mbps line can stream 4K all day long. This guide walks through each number and what it actually means for your real-world experience.

Download vs upload speed

Download speed is how fast data arrives at your device — relevant for streaming, web pages, software updates, and game downloads. Upload speed is how fast data leaves — relevant for video calls, livestreaming, large file uploads, cloud backups, and screen sharing. Asymmetric plans (cable, DSL) give you far more download than upload; symmetric plans (most fiber) give you the same in both directions.

Latency, ping, and jitter

Latency is the round-trip time for a single packet, usually measured in milliseconds. Ping is the tool that measures it. Jitter is the variation between consecutive ping results — a steady 40 ms is great, while a network that bounces between 20 ms and 200 ms feels broken even though the average looks fine. For gaming, video calls, and remote desktops, consistent low latency matters more than raw bandwidth.

Packet loss

Packet loss is the percentage of data packets that don't make it. Anything above ~1% is noticeable on video calls and gaming; above ~2% it disrupts most real-time apps. The internet retransmits dropped packets automatically (for TCP), which is why high loss feels like slow speeds even when bandwidth tests look fine.

Why speed tests differ

Different speed tests use different servers, different test sizes, different protocols, and different ways of measuring. Two tests run a minute apart on the same connection can disagree by 30% or more — that's normal. What matters is the trend across many tests over time, not a single result.

What actually affects speed

  • Your plan ceiling — you can't exceed what the ISP provisions.
  • Wi-Fi vs Ethernet — wired is faster, more stable, and lower-latency.
  • Router age and capacity — older Wi-Fi standards bottleneck modern connections.
  • Local congestion — many devices sharing the same uplink.
  • ISP congestion — peak-hour saturation on the ISP side.
  • Destination server — the site you're hitting may itself be slow.

Fiber vs cable vs DSL vs fixed wireless

Fiber delivers the most consistent speed and latency, usually symmetric. Cable is fast for downloads but uploads lag and performance can drop during neighborhood peak hours. DSL is the slowest of the three and distance-dependent. Fixed wireless (including 5G home internet) varies widely with weather, line of sight, and tower load.
