Video conferencing quality, explained
Video calls are real-time bidirectional video and audio, which makes them more sensitive to latency, jitter, and packet loss than almost anything else you do online. A connection that streams 4K perfectly can still produce a choppy call.
What good call quality needs
- Upload: 3 Mbps for 1080p, 1.5 Mbps for 720p, ~600 kbps minimum for SD video.
- Download: 3-4 Mbps per other participant in HD.
- Latency: under 150 ms ideal, under 250 ms acceptable.
- Jitter: under 30 ms.
- Packet loss: under 1% for audio, under 2% for video.
Why upload matters most
Most home connections are asymmetric — far more download than upload. Video calls are the rare workload that needs serious upload, because you're sending your camera feed in real time. A 500/20 Mbps cable plan can stream 4K Netflix flawlessly and still struggle with HD video calls under load.
Wi-Fi is usually the problem
Most call quality issues are Wi-Fi, not internet. Switch to Ethernet for important meetings if possible. If you must use Wi-Fi, get close to the router, prefer 5 GHz, and avoid the kitchen during anyone's lunch (microwaves interfere with 2.4 GHz).
Per-platform tips
- Zoom: enable "Original ratio" off, disable HD if your network is marginal, use the wired audio when possible.
- Teams: close other Office apps competing for bandwidth; Teams aggressively syncs files in the background.
- Meet: lower send resolution in settings if you're the choppy one.
When to escalate
If quality is consistently bad across platforms despite Ethernet and a quiet network, the issue is your ISP or the path to the conferencing provider's media servers. A traceroute during a call usually shows where the latency lives.
