ISP and broadband, explained

The technology behind your internet plan determines its real-world behavior far more than the advertised speed. A 200 Mbps fiber plan generally outperforms a 1 Gbps cable plan for video calls, gaming, and remote work because of how each technology handles upload, latency, and contention.

Fiber (FTTH)

Fiber to the home delivers dedicated capacity over light. Symmetric speeds (same up and down), very low latency, very low jitter, and minimal degradation under load. The gold standard for any latency- or upload-sensitive workload.

Cable (DOCSIS)

Cable shares a single coaxial loop with your neighbors. Fast advertised downloads, much slower uploads (often 20-50 Mbps on a 1 Gbps plan), and noticeable degradation during peak neighborhood hours. DOCSIS 4.0 closes the upload gap but isn't widely deployed yet.

DSL

Older technology running over telephone copper. Speed drops dramatically with distance from the central office. Acceptable for browsing, often inadequate for video conferencing and modern streaming. Being phased out in many regions.

Fixed wireless (including 5G home internet)

Service from a tower to an antenna at your home. Latency is generally good, throughput varies widely with weather, line of sight, distance to the tower, and tower congestion. 5G home internet has matured rapidly and is a strong alternative where wired options are slow or expensive — but performance is less predictable than fiber or cable.

Satellite (LEO)

Low Earth orbit satellite (Starlink and competitors) has dramatically reduced satellite latency from ~600 ms (geostationary) to ~30-60 ms. Throughput is competitive with mid-tier cable, with the same kind of peak-hour variation. Often the only viable option for rural areas.

What to look at on a plan

  • Upload speed, not just download.
  • Data caps and overage fees.
  • Whether the price increases after a promo period.
  • Equipment rental fees — buying your own modem often pays back in a year.
  • Whether the technology is fiber, cable, DSL, or wireless — this matters more than the number.
