Streaming performance, explained
Streaming is bandwidth-sensitive but also sensitive to short interruptions. A connection that 'feels fast' on web browsing can still buffer mid-show if it can't sustain throughput steadily.
What different qualities actually need
- SD (480p): ~3 Mbps sustained.
- HD (1080p): ~8 Mbps sustained.
- 4K (UHD): ~25 Mbps sustained.
- 4K HDR / Dolby Vision: ~30 Mbps sustained, sometimes more.
These are per-stream. Multiple devices streaming at once stack on top of each other.
What causes buffering
- Sustained throughput below the stream's bitrate — the buffer empties faster than it fills.
- Wi-Fi drops — short interruptions that pause the data feed.
- ISP throttling — some plans deprioritize video traffic at peak hours.
- CDN congestion — the streaming provider's edge servers are overloaded in your region.
- Device CPU — older streaming sticks can't decode 4K HDR.
Why one app buffers and another doesn't
Each streaming service uses its own CDN. Netflix routes through Open Connect; YouTube through Google; Disney+ through Akamai/AWS. If your ISP has good peering with one and bad peering with another, your experience can vary dramatically between services on the same connection.
Diagnosing quality drops
Run a speed test while the issue is happening. If throughput is fine, check Wi-Fi by switching to Ethernet (or moving the device closer to the router).
