Plain-English explanation
Modem is short for modulator-demodulator. The device modulates outgoing digital data onto the carrier signal your ISP uses, and demodulates incoming signal back to digital bits.
On modern fiber lines the equivalent device is an ONT (Optical Network Terminal). On cable it's a DOCSIS modem. On DSL, an ADSL/VDSL modem. ISPs sometimes ship gateway devices that combine modem + router + Wi-Fi in one chassis.
Real-world examples
- A DOCSIS 3.1 modem is required to take full advantage of multi-gigabit cable internet.
- Fiber lines plug into an ONT which then connects via Ethernet to your router.
Why it matters
An undersized modem caps your line speed regardless of how powerful your router is.
Modem firmware bugs and degraded signal levels are common but underdiagnosed causes of intermittent disconnections.
Common misconceptions
- Myth: Replacing the modem boosts Wi-Fi performance.
Reality: A modem does not broadcast Wi-Fi unless it's also a gateway. Wi-Fi performance is determined by the router (or the wireless portion of a gateway).
