Wi-Fi 6 vs Wi-Fi 7: what changed and what didn't

Router marketing has moved from 'AX' to 'BE' branding, and the spec sheets quote throughput numbers no household will ever see. Here's what the new standards actually deliver and where the spend is justified.

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)

Released 2019. Big real-world wins: OFDMA (more efficient sharing of airtime among many devices), Target Wake Time (better battery life on phones and IoT), and improved performance in crowded networks. Operates on 2.4 and 5 GHz.

Wi-Fi 6E

Same protocol as Wi-Fi 6, plus the 6 GHz band. The 6 GHz band is currently quiet (few legacy devices, lots of channels), giving Wi-Fi 6E clients much higher real-world throughput and lower contention than the 5 GHz band — at the cost of slightly shorter range.

Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be)

Released 2024. Key new features:

  • 320 MHz channels in the 6 GHz band — double the maximum channel width of Wi-Fi 6E.
  • Multi-Link Operation (MLO) — a single client can use multiple bands simultaneously, lowering latency and improving reliability.
  • 4K-QAM modulation — ~20% more throughput per stream in good conditions.

When the upgrade pays off

  • You have a multi-gig internet plan and gigabit clients within line-of-sight of the router.
  • You game or stream on devices that ship with Wi-Fi 7 (newer phones, laptops, consoles).
  • You live in an apartment with heavy 5 GHz congestion — the 6 GHz band is a real escape valve.

When to stick with what you have

  • You have a sub-gigabit plan — the radio isn't your bottleneck.
  • Your clients are mostly older phones/laptops without 6 GHz support.
  • Your real problem is coverage. Add mesh nodes or wired access points instead — see router placement.
