Step 1: Measure before you change anything
Run a speed test next to the router on a wired connection if possible, then again on Wi-Fi where you actually use the internet. The gap between the two tells you whether your ISP, your router, or your Wi-Fi is the bottleneck.
Step 2: Quick wins that almost always help
- Power-cycle the modem and router for a full 30 seconds. The single biggest free win.
- Move the router off the floor, away from the TV, and out of cabinets. Line-of-sight matters.
- Switch your device to the 5 GHz band when you're in the same room.
- Replace ethernet cables older than 10 years — Cat5 caps at 100 Mbps.
- Update router firmware. Most consumer routers ship with critical performance fixes years later.
Step 3: Diagnose what's left
If a wired test matches your plan but Wi-Fi is slow, the answer is signal — try a mesh node or relocate the router. If even the wired test is slow, the problem is upstream: your modem, the line, or the ISP. A traceroute and a packet-loss test together tell you which.
Step 4: Stop blaming bandwidth when it's latency
“Slow internet” often means high latency, not low bandwidth. Video calls freeze at 5 Mbps with bad jitter; they're fine at 5 Mbps with stable jitter. If your throughput is fine but everything feels slow, measure latency and packet loss instead.
