Buffering = bandwidth dips, not low average speed
A 4K Netflix stream needs ~15 Mbps held continuously for 8 seconds at a time. If your line averages 80 Mbps but drops to 4 Mbps in bursts — common on shared Wi-Fi or saturated uplinks — the player runs out of buffer and pauses to refill. That's why fast connections still freeze.
The fast diagnostic order
- Streaming readiness test — measures sustained bandwidth and stability, not just a peak number.
- Packet loss — even 1% loss forces the player to downshift quality and re-buffer.
- Latency & jitter — adaptive bitrate streamers (HLS, DASH) react badly to jitter spikes.
Fixes that actually clear buffering
- Switch the streaming device to 5 GHz Wi-Fi, or wire it directly if possible.
- Pause cloud backups and game updates running in the background — they saturate the uplink and starve your stream.
- Lower stream quality temporarily; let the player relearn your line.
- Reboot the modem and router. If buffering returns within hours, your ISP's upstream is the bottleneck.
