Fixing video buffering: a low-cost diagnostic workflow

Upgrading the internet plan is the first thing people try and the least likely thing to fix buffering. Most issues live between the router and the screen — and most fixes are free.

Step 1 — measure where the bottleneck is

Run a speed test on a device sitting next to the screen that's buffering. Compare to a wired test if possible. If wireless throughput at the TV is well below the wired number, Wi-Fi is the bottleneck. If both are below the plan rate, the issue is the ISP link.

Step 2 — eliminate easy variables

  • Reboot router and modem (cold restart, wait 60 seconds).
  • Restart the streaming device.
  • Pause other downloads, backups, and large uploads.
  • Disable VPN if active.
  • Try a different streaming app or piece of content to confirm it isn't service-specific.

Step 3 — improve Wi-Fi or wire it

  • Move the streaming device closer to the router or move the router closer to the device.
  • Switch the device to the 5 GHz band if it's on 2.4 GHz.
  • Wire it via Ethernet. A single Cat 6 cable to a TV or console eliminates 90% of streaming complaints.
  • Add a mesh node or wired access point near the affected area.

Step 4 — manage household contention

If buffering correlates with someone else streaming, uploading, or gaming — you're saturating the link. Enable QoS or SQM on the router so no single flow can dominate. See QoS explained.

Step 5 — escalate to the ISP with data

If wired speed tests are consistently below the plan rate, and pings show sustained loss past the gateway, you have ISP-side evidence. Open a ticket with timestamps and traceroute output. Tickets backed by data move faster than 'it's slow'.

Step 6 — only then consider a plan upgrade

If you have multiple concurrent 4K streams plus heavy uploads, and you've eliminated everything else, a higher tier may genuinely help. Use the framework in choosing an internet plan to right-size.
